6: Sci-fi

Oh. Sorry for the delay. I just finished finals on Friday. I suppose its my turn to choose the theme.

Theme #6: Sci-fi
(Pretty much self explanatory.)
Due date: Since everyone is probably busy during the winter holidays, how about Sunday, January 10th.

note: uh, ill try to work on the last theme, but I can't guarantee I'll post it because I haven't started it due to finals.

5. Diptych

okay, so this entry for SURE needs some work. i originally wanted to paint this with acrylic but i was running out of time so gave it some quick photoshop colors... except for some small areas, i don't think they look that great (the flowers for the girl definitelyyy suck) so i want to try painting them soon. my original plan is to mount them to cardboard backing (covered in cloth) with a hinge in the center so they open up like a portfolio/book/thing.  :D

here's the lineart first so the general idea isn't ruined by my shitty photoshop coloring:

 some detail shots for fun:

suggestions? i definitely think the guy could use something extra but i don't know what.. i didn't want to give him any big, poofy flowers though, haha

5. Diptich: And the Return of the Highschool Obsession

So. While I was looking for what I could draw, I found my old obsession again. (i.e. Aki +_+) And this was also my attempt at trying to make photo-like digital painting by using a photo reference. I'm sooo tired right now and I decided I could not do more for the day =_= You will see that there are lot of unfinished parts -_-....

Would It Be Bad to Postpone the Theme?

Hey girls,

So I hate to put this up but I still have like no clue what I'm going to do for this project though I'm oober excited about the theme and I don't want to do some half-heartedly done drawing like I do sometimes. What do you think about pushing the deadline to ... say next Friday? Are your finals over by then?

5. Diptych

Theme: Diptych format with subject matter of choice
Due date: this one's a little weirder, plus there's thanksgiving.. so I'm going to say Dec 2nd, 11:59pm.

A diptych is traditionally a work of art that is displayed/created on two panels (can be wood or other substrate) and connected with a hinge. You guys can construct one, take photos, or draw/paint something, but basically I'd like just two separate pieces of art that would presumably be displayed/viewed side by side, matching in size/shape/proportion, and connected by a sort of theme. The subject matter is up to you guys; you can depict a scene, something with a dual nature, a sequence, whatever. You can even get away with taking one image and split it down the center (as you'll see in example #5 below). It's up to you guys. If you don't have time to make a finished piece by the due date, a concept drawing or plan is fine too. :)

examples:
the first three are pretty traditional but the rest are different, so take your time looking through them :)

Fairytale + Cat = Little Red Ridinghood Kitty

Sorry this is late. I kept thinking the due date was today. (Last week I thought the due date was tuesday too....^^;; my bad)

I wanted an animated film look to it. Hopefully it sorta turned out like it.

(I also wanted to put a big bad wolf in too...but turned out weird looking.)

Great Theme Jinyu. It was fun

4. Fairytale

I had a bunch of ideas for this one regarding popular fairytales (like aladdin!) but none of them really inspired me, so I decided to do my own concept/character design. Mostly I just wanted to go with something princess-like ('cause that's what I think of first when hearing "fairytale," hehe), so I ended up with this ice princess person thing (if you can imagine the picture in white, light blue, and silver).. and her cat advisor.. or something. haha. I like how it turned out but I definitely think I could clean it up and improve upon it a bit. :)

4. Fairytales: Puss in Boots

What better fairy tales to incorporate a cat than Puss in Boots! I wanted to get this kind of old, fairy tale illustration look, but the digital coloring didn't come out the way I wanted. This is what I have so far, but I intend to do something to make it better. Comments would help :)

Jin is moving the deadline

Hey guys,

So I've been having an issue with my sister's host family, and I'm not going to be able to post any artworks today. I'm extending the deadline to next week to be fair for all of us. Sorry to do this late minute!

4. Fairytales!

Theme: Fairytale with a CAT!
Due Date: Nov. 2nd, 10pm!
So we can look at our work and comment before we go to bed :D

Pick any fairytale of your choice and include a cat somehow! If you don't feel like drawing a whole cat, you can suggest just a hint of a cat. Like its tail showing through door crack or paw prints or anything that might indicate a presence of a cat is fine.

If you do not have enough time, you could try some background concept art (as some of us have been doing already XD) or character design. You could make some illustrations of an important moment like you'd see in a children's book.

I know everyone's been busy, and I'm so happy we are getting our lazy butts to work. It's nice to see all of your artworks :D

3. Miyazaki

Hey guys! Sorry I'm a little late this time..
For this theme I wanted to do something similar to the scene in spirited away where the train is running through the flooded countryside. I looooooove the imagery in that scene, and I tried twice to replicate it, but I wasn't very successful... :( The funny thing is, I think my second attempt was worse than the first.

3. Miyazaki: They're Delicious, You Know.

My tablet was acting up and I couldn't get the opacity to work. But then it looked kinda cool to color it really flat and kind of messy like water color on the sketchy drawing XD

3. Miyazaki Theme

My version of Totoro....lol.......Yeah, I know...doesn't resemble the original one...

I had some elaborate idea to put all major miyazaki characters into one big-ass picture. But I apparently got lazy pushing the third character....so that didn't happen...

Then I tried just doing Mononoke Hime since its my favorite Miyazaki film...But wasn't satisfied with it. I tried coloring it, but apparently I still can't color. And i've run out of time to experiment with it.....I guess I need to work on my art-time management....

EDIT: wow...im looking at this from my desktop....and the colors of these are so different from viewing from my laptop......wow.just wow...lol

3. Miyazaki

Theme: Miyazaki Hayao
Deadline: 10.18.09 (~2 weeks)

I recently watched Miyazaki's latest film, Ponyo. So in honor to his new release, lets have a Miyazaki Theme!

The theme is pretty much self explained. And it is not just restricted to his original characters or settings. You could do a piece on anything that reminds you of his works. You could do a piece on ideas that you thought that could have made his animated releases better. Pretty much anything.

I look forward to seeing whatever you guys come up with.
Have fun! :D

2. When Did This Storm Begin?

ok.....sorry it looks so janky. This is a simple quicky....
hmm not sure how to make the picture look bigger in the post...heh..

This theme was a tad difficult for me...I had a lot of ideas, but I was not sure how to draw them. And apparently couldn't do much w/ my ideas due to lack of time.
I'm sorry Emily that this was submitted past your due date!

(not sure if you could tell, but thats a bottle w/ money in it.......)

And HOW DO YOU DRAW CLOUDS!? Any tips?
Emily, your clouds are SO GORGEOUS! teach meeee.

2. When Did This Storm Begin

She was originally supposed to have a bloody nose but I ran out of time.. and there are some other edits I'd like to make but it's mostly done. xD I'm just glad I didn't completely fuck up the skin color like I did when I was working on it last night, haha..

2. When Did This Storm Begin: Concept

---Edit 10/04/09
Something I tried. Hm....

---Edit 10/02/09
Sorry guys, I'm gonna have to push this to the weekend too. In the mean time, Nikki should post up the next theme! :D

----------

So I wasn't sure if I have enough time to complete this today. I'm putting up my rough concept art, and I'll try to flesh it out today or tomorrow. >_<

2. When Did This Storm Begin

Theme: "When Did This Storm Begin" (by Shiny Toy Guns)
Deadline: Sept 30, 11:59 pm

You can respond to the phrase/idea itself, or listen to the song here (which is amazing by the way) and respond to the lyrics, melody, album art of the cd it goes on, anything. Good luck and have fun!!

(note: Disregard the title of the youtube page, it's definitely "this storm" and not "the storm." Also, the school bell ringing sound at the end of the song is the beginning of the next one on the album, don't worry about it too much; I know it sounds pretty random. haha)

1. Warm Up

"Don't worry, it's just a warm up." says the kid.

I feel like I should've done more XD My drawing looks so.... sketchy compared to you guys'. I've been procrastinating! >_< I'll make sure to put up something better next time. Who's deciding our next theme?

1. Warm up

Nothing too fancy. I was watching something on TV about Smilodon (aka saber tooth tigers) the other day. They turned out to be really neat creatures, so I decided to draw a skeleton.

1. Warm Up

Theme: Warm up
Deadline: September 15th, 10pm.

I figure we need to warm up. It can be something really light and quick. So I say we give ourselves a week. Looking forward to seeing your works!

Our bellies just made some noise

We figured it's time for us to stop procrastinating in feeding our art bellies. It's been too long since we've last picked up a pencil to draw. So here is what we're going to do.

1. Everyone signup on blogger and follow this blog.
2. Randomly pick someone to come up with a theme.
3. The person will make a post with the theme as the title (and some explanations if needed). The theme can be a word, a phrase, part of a lyric, poem, anything. It could even be a cool image you found on web. Anything that's inspirational.
4. Everyone will check the blog and make some awesome artworks and post them on the blog.
5. We will all oooh and ahhh at the artworks and this will encourage us to make more art works.
6. Sounds good?
