8. Ocean Life: Cephalopod

i love cephalopods!!!! <3
more specifically, the one above is a common cuttlefish (sepia officinalis) that was photographed in Ocean: Revealing the Secrets of the Deep by Bryan Richard.

< this is what it looks like with the reference i used.

i actually think it looked better before i painted the background :(

  1. WOW! that looks so neat! I love cuttlefish!
    Its cute. lmao.

But I agree with you. I think it looked better before you painted the background also. the cuttlefish stood out a lot more with the white background. I think the background was a tad too dark. But overall, a GREAT JOB! Lovely painting as usual. It really looks like a cuttle fish.

  2. Nice!
You could probably get some water and wipe off some of the pigments if you want to thin down the background. I'm not sure the paper can handle it though.

There is also really nice brush work going on. I love the texture on the head and I read the grayish blue from the bottom as a kind of reflected light.

    Good job!

  3. Or! You could make the background super dark. I think what's important is bringing down the saturation of the blue. 'cause the cuttlefish is pretty muted color.

You know, I actually didn't know what they were called until now XD
